The Full Story of

Shadow Hammer

The name Shadow Hammer is one part legacy and two parts inspiration, all from complete strangers who may never know their impact.

It began with a house.

In 2018, Thomas bought his first house in Flint, a 1920's English tudor that needed some TLC to unearth its natural charm. He dug into the work with vigor, of course, restoring the old beauty room by room.

Working full-time and third-shift as an emergency responder, he spent his nights off encouraging his neighbors to invest in earplugs, running saws and drills and swinging hammers in the wee hours of the morning.

He was dedicated and determined, but as time wore on, the exhausting schedule and seemingly endless repairs began to take their toll.

What was it all for?

...which inspired a dream...

As if it sensed his discouragement, the house revealed an answer for him in the form of a simple chalk outline. (Not the kind he was accustomed to seeing in his police work. That might have inspired a completely different story...)

In the rafters of the garage where he had built his workshop, he found the chalked silhouette of a hammer, signed by Al and Ted, who called themselves the "Shadow Hammers." The inscription was complete with their time on the job, dated June 1933.

Thomas was immediately intrigued and uplifted. He'd never know who these people were, but here was a record of their work, a reminder that their hands had labored in his home nearly a century before, laying the foundation for the work he was doing now.

He wasn't starting from scratch. He was adding to the rich legacy of all those who had worked and lived in this space before. He was writing another chapter in the story of his home. And he would live on through the history he was creating, just as the Shadow Hammers had done before him.

...and grew into
a mission.

When Thomas set out to begin his professional career in general contracting, he wanted to communicate to his clients that he cares deeply about outcomes and is personally invested in the longevity of the work he does. Every final product is a piece of history, his contribution to the life-story of your home.

No project is just a job: It's a legacy.

It was an easy choice, then, to use the Shadow Hammers for continued inspiration. It's just a happy coincidence that the mysterious name also makes him sound a lot like a super hero.
